MWA Announces Keynote Speaker for 2010 Conference: Author Roxana Robinson

The Maryland Writers’ Association announces that the keynote speaker for our annual statewide writers’ conference on April 24, 2010 will be novelist, biographer, and columnist Roxana Robinson.

Ms. Robinson will address the topic of writing as a unique occupation, and the will discuss the writer’s life, its complexities, frustrations and rewards.

Ms. Robinson is the author of eight books, four of which were named as New York Times Notable Books, and two of which were New York Times Editors’ Choices.

Her work has been featured in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper’s, Daedalus, One-Story, The American Scholar, PEN Journal, Best American Short Stories, and elsewhere. Her non-fiction has appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and elsewhere.

You’ll have the opportunity to fine-tune your craft in sessions led by established authors, instructors, and experts. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, there is plenty for you at the conference.

The Maryland Writers’ Association’s Annual Conference draws writers from across Maryland and beyond. Attendees will have opportunities to hone their skills in sessions led by established authors, instructors, and experts. Topics will range from writing for youth and adult audiences, writing in different genres, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, and will cover both the business and craft of writing. Literary agents and editors will be on hand. Immediately following the conference on Saturday evening, we will celebrate a year of writing with MWA members and friends at the Writers’ Banquet and Awards Dinner.

Booth Keynotes Maryland Writers’ Association Annual Conference

Robert L. Booth is confirmed as the keynote speaker for the Maryland Writers’ Association 21st Annual Conference: “Writing Your Success Story.”

Keynote speaker Robert L. Booth, former Managing Editor of National Geographic, is newly retired from the magazine after a 35-year career. He joined the editorial staff as an intern in 1974, writing captions for its famed photographs. He subsequently wrote by-lined articles that took him from the Canadian Arctic to the South Pacific, and over the years has circled the globe several times on assignment.

As an editor, Booth worked closely with both staff and freelance writers and ultimately became involved in the overall planning and production of the magazine, which today is published in more than 30 languages around the world. On his watch, National Geographic garnered a small herd of “Ellies,” the coveted National Magazine Awards, including the top prize for “General Excellence.” Most recently, he has been editing special single-topic issues of the magazine designed exclusively for the newsstand. The latest edition, Energy for Tomorrow, is available now. A native of Washington, D.C, he grew up in Maryland and makes his home in Arlington, Virginia.

The MWA’s Annual Conference, which draws writers from across Maryland and beyond, takes place on Saturday, May 9, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. In addition, celebrate a year of writing with your fellow MWA members and friends at the Writers’ Banquet, Friday, May 8, 2009. Both events will be held at the Maritime Institute of Technology Conference Center, 692 Maritime Boulevard, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090.
